With a vision to one day be able to stay at home with my family while still contributing financially, I started a small Etsy shop from a storage closet in college. As my small business grew and that dream came true, so did my passion for helping other women who shared the desire to work from home but still do something they love. So around here, you'll find resources and tools to help you steward your home and work well.
“What do you want to be when you grow up?”
It’s a question we hear a lot as kids. It helps us begin to dream up and stir up our passions and talents – even at a young age. Perhaps your answer was to be an astronaut, teacher, or doctor. Maybe you wanted to be an author, singer or artist. But when you did actually ‘grow up’ – did your dream and answer to that question come to fruition? Do you even remember what your dream was all those years ago?
For some, this is completely the case and they are absolutely living our their dreams as a child. But for the rest of us, we are still figuring it out over here by putting some fragmented pieces together.
If that’s you – welcome to the club. With a background in Health Care Administration myself, but being an author, speaker, and podcaster, I am probably the President of the ‘Figure It Out As You Go’ Club.
But you see, this is why it’s important that we never stop asking, ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ once we reach a certain age. At least, this is what I learned from my wise and unicorn business friend, Alli Worthington. Alli is the author of The Year of Living Happy, Fierce Faith: A Woman’s Guide to Fighting Fear, Wrestling Worry and Overcoming Anxiety and Breaking Busy: Finding Peace and Purpose in a World of Crazy, she is the co-founder of the Blissdom Conference, and is a speaker, podcaster, and business coach. Her goal is to help women live the life they were created to live.
As you can tell, Alli knows a thing or two about creating a career for yourself. I have learned so much from Alli in regards to not putting myself, or talents, in a box. We live in a time where we are able to put together those fragmented pieces and passions, throw off the labels placed on us, and create a career where we can truly make an impact – even if we aren’t exactly certain what that looks like quite yet.
Our lives and careers are an on-going, ever progressing, newly surprising journey. If you’re ready to take the pressure out of the figuring out process, identify the triggers that are holding you back from your next steps, and learn how to develop tools to get out of your own way, this episode is for you, sister.
Alli imparts so much wisdom in this episode for those of us still asking what we want to be. She encourages us women to show up, even when you’re terrified, and even before it makes sense. In her wise piece of advice, things usually don’t make sense until you’re able to look back on it. In other words, this is your permission to go for it, right now, even before you know why.
Friend, it may be your mindset, not skill set, that is holding you back. Step into your strengths, show up when it’s scary, identify triggers that are keeping you small, and get out of you own way. You are capable. You are wise. You are loved.
If you haven’t done so today, ask yourself, ‘What do I want to be when I grow up?’
