Did you know that out of the millions of women who are on the birth control pill, roughly 60 percent take it for non-contraceptive reasons like painful periods, endometriosis, and acne?

Maybe you’re one of those people and you want to learn more about the long-term effects of being on the pill.

Maybe you’ve been on the pill for a while, but now you’re about to go off so you can start a family and you want to make sure you do it right.

Or maybe you’re not on the pill, but you’re struggling to find a doctor who will listen to you and you want to learn more about women’s health.

After having multiple miscarriages, I had to learn how to advocate for my health and find a doctor who was invested in me, and was willing to dig to find answers.

And let me tell ya, I’ve learned so much over the past year (more than I ever thought I would) about women’s health and advocating for your health.

And that’s what I talked about on the podcast with Dr. Jolene Brighten, a pioneer in women’s medicine and award-winning naturopathic physician.

If anyone knows about patient advocacy and women’s health, it’s this amazing woman.

Beyond the Birth Control Pill

An international speaker, author, clinical educator, and medical advisor, Dr. Brighten is a fierce patient advocate who’s completely dedicated to uncovering the root cause of hormonal imbalances.

She empowers women worldwide to take control of their health and hormones and has been featured in the New York Post, Forbes, Huffington Post, The Guardian, and more.

Her book, Beyond the Pill, explores the effects of the birth control pill, how to get to the root cause of hormone issues, and how to take control of your health.

And guys, she brought FIRE to the podcast! 🔥

She has a ton of wisdom and knowledge to share about women’s health, hormones, and patient advocacy – and she’s sharing it with you.

Advocate For Your Health

One of the things I loved most about my conversation with Dr. Brighten was her passion for patient advocacy.

Have you ever gone to a doctor’s office and explained all the symptoms you’re experiencing only to have them dismiss you and write a prescription?

Sadly, gaslighting can be a common occurrence for many patients. It can be a struggle to find a doctor who will listen and who’s willing to dig deeper into the symptoms you’re experiencing.

But it’s so important and valuable to find a doctor who will listen and truly invest in you.

There are great providers out there, but sometimes, you may have to work to find one who’s right for you.

When you really think about it, you’re hiring your doctor. If I hire someone to come and fix my house and they don’t do a good job, I’m gonna probably leave a review or call them and ask them to fix it.

But we often don’t look at medicine the same way. There’s a narrative out there that says you can’t question your doctor or get a second opinion.

But you have permission to ask the hard questions or seek a new doctor who will listen.

As Dr. Brighten said, “Be a troublemaker. Challenge your doctor. You know your body way better than your doctor does… It’s about time we put the medicine back in the people’s hands.”

Don’t be afraid to look around until you find a doctor who will partner with you.
