If you’ve ever been through grief, heartbreak or suffering, you’ve probably asked yourself the question: How is this my life?
Maybe you’ve looked in a mirror and not recognized the person looking back at you. Or maybe you’ve sat around wondering where to find the manual that will show you how to skip through the painful chapters of your life.
I mean, really, wouldn’t that be nice?
Hear me when I say, I’m right there with ya, friend. Having suffered two miscarriages this year, I’ve spent so many days struggling to find strength or beauty in what feels like a life gone off track.
Intense grief, insane hormones, and two pregnancies back to back does a number on the body – and the heart.
When you’re facing suffering, loss, or physical trauma, it’s easy to spend a lot of time looking back, wishing things would go back to “normal.” The life in front of you doesn’t always look so beautiful. It just looks broken.
That’s what I talked about on the podcast with Katherine Wolf, speaker, co-founder of Hope Heals Camp, and author of Suffer Strong.
If anyone knows how to find beauty in the midst of suffering, it’s this faith warrior.
Suffer Strong
As a new mama at 26, Katherine faced an unexpected and near-fatal brain stem stroke that left her in a wheelchair with long-term disabilities. Overnight, she and her husband, Jay, saw their world change forever.
But through years of healing, Katherine has found how to build an incredible and beautiful life right in the middle of the pain.
She knows we all share in the story of struggle, but she’s on a mission to show how much more we share the story of strength.
Redefining Beauty
When I started talking with Katherine about her story, I LOVED her take on life. I mean, this girl’s got perspective.
She said, “I get to be a part of this life and this story.”
Just park your train there for a second.
How often do we have that kind of attitude? So much of the time I think we have a plan for our life and when life doesn’t follow the script, we become angry and disillusioned. Have you ever felt like that? I know I have!
But what if we shifted our perspective to see that our story is something we have the gift of being a part of? What if we begin redefining beauty in the middle of our struggle?
As Katherine said, “The life right in front of you is there for a reason. Don’t miss it wishing you had something else. Focus on what is, not what isn’t.”
Can you drop any more truth? 🙌
Something beautiful happens when we shift our focus from what we don’t have to what we do have. When we stop comparing our journey to someone else’s or to our own ideas of what we wanted our life to look like.
It’s not easy, but that’s where we start seeing beauty in the middle of the mess.
