Have you ever felt like there’s an underlying message in society that you have to find your passion, build a great career, be a rockstar, and manage to have a family all at the same time (and all by the time you’re 30)?

Yeah, no pressure, or anything.

The problem with this message is that it often leads women to feel like they’re somehow behind in life, and causes us to juggle too many things at once, leading to burnout.

If a woman is focused on her kids, she thinks, “Gosh, all I’m being is a mom” and she may compare herself to the woman next door who’s starting her own business or has a fancy job title.

Another woman in her 20’s, who hasn’t found her husband or figured out her purpose, feels behind because she feels like she “doesn’t have it all together.”

Ever been there, friend?

Yep, me too.

But thankfully, my mom taught me, and modeled, that life comes in seasons.

She always reminded me that you don’t have to do it all or do everything in a certain timeline.

And if you need some good mom advice on this topic, like I got growing up, then guess what?

I brought my mom back onto the podcast to share her wisdom with you!

We’re talking about how to navigate the pressure to do it all and how to adjust through seasons of change.

Doing It Well Vs. Doing It All

First, let me tell you about my mom.

She was a great example to me on how to embrace each season in life as it comes.

She started her career in the 80’s as an engineer, which she chose because it was a marketable job.

And although it was a good job, she quickly realized that it wasn’t really what she was passionate about.

When she became a mom, she decided she wanted to be home more. So she took a step back to work some odd jobs and businesses that would give her more flexibility in her schedule.

(Oh, and she even invented a device for mothers of newborns, which she sold to Target).

While there was a lot of pressure to do it all at once (be a wife, be a mom, run a business, etc.), she ultimately realized that she wanted to focus more on doing each thing well, rather than doing it all.

Read that again, friend. To her, it was more about doing it well, than doing it all.

(I don’t know about you, but I need that reminder daily!).

In order to do that, she decided to work a little less while my brother and I were young.

Then, once we got older, and started to head off to college, she had more time and opportunities to really focus on building a business.

In fact, she built a successful business working with MLB players (I’m not gonna give too much away, so, you’ll have to listen to the full episode to hear how that happened!) and now is about to release her first book!

You Have Time

Maybe you’re saying, “Okay, that’s cool and all. But why are you telling me this, J? What does that have to do with my situation?”

Well, I want to show you that you have time to accomplish whatever is on your heart.

Whether you want to be a mom, build a business, write a book, open a smoothie store, become VP, or all the above…you can do it, but you don’t have to do it all at once, or all by the time you’re 30.

Life comes in seasons and sometimes the best thing we can do is focus on one thing at a time, and do that one thing really well.

As my mom said: “Life is in stages and it’s about knowing what stage you’re in and listening to it.”

My mom started her career by working in the corporate world, then for a while she focused on being a mom. And later in her 40’s, she went on to build a successful business for over a decade and now is about to release her first book in just a few weeks!

But she didn’t do it all in a day, or even ten years. It was a slow build that allowed her to focus on one priority at a time, which if you ask me, is pretty wise because it allows you to really steward the season you’re in right now.

Remember? It was more about doing it well, than doing it all.

You Don’t Have to Do It All
